The Earthy Abstract Guide
Why earthy abstracts settle into almost any room
Earthy abstracts borrow their palette from the ground itself — clay, rust, sand, stone and umber — and set it against a lot of soft cream and gray. Most of the pieces here show thick, built-up layers, so even the quietest of them has plenty of surface to look at.
The collection falls into a few families: three wide horizon pieces and one tall one; a trio of layered ledges in rust and pale gray; two heavy built-up ridges; and a set of square compositions made from cream panels, copper-toned blocks, thick white strokes and faint drawn circles. What ties them together is the warm neutral palette rather than any one subject.
Where it works best
Living rooms with linen, oak and wool are the easiest fit, and bedrooms follow close behind because the palette stays calm. These pieces also warm up a very modern room, softening white walls and gray sofas without adding strong color.
Sizing for the space
The wide pieces are made for long furniture: a three-seat sofa, a bed with a low headboard or a media console. The square pieces work alone above a chair or console, or in pairs and rows of three above a longer sofa. Umber Horizon, the one tall piece, suits a narrow wall.
Color pairing
Cream, oatmeal, taupe and warm gray are the natural partners, with rust, terracotta and cognac leather as accents, and brass or aged bronze to pick up the copper tones. Very saturated colors, such as bright blue or hot pink, tend to fight with the palette rather than lift it.

Explore MoreLayering Texture
Making texture work in a neutral room
In a room of cream, beige and gray, texture does the job that color does elsewhere. The built-up ridges, drips and heavy strokes in these pieces give a neutral wall depth, and they look best when the room around them has texture too: a wool rug, a linen sofa, a rough ceramic lamp or raw wood.
If the room is already full of pattern, choose one of the calmer squares with plenty of open cream. If it is plain and smooth, one of the built-up ridges or layered ledges can carry the whole wall.
Grouping pieces
Two or three of the square pieces hang well as a row, because they share the same cream panels, copper-toned blocks and drawn circles. Keep the spacing even and the tops level, and the set reads as one wall rather than separate pictures.

Explore MoreChoosing Your Piece
Picking the right piece for your space
Start with the shape of the wall. Terracotta Drift, Sienna Wash and Earthy Geometric Blocks are wide; Umber Horizon is tall; Sable Current, Adobe Layers and Umber and Ivory Abstract are a little wider than they are tall; and everything else is square.
Then decide how much rust you want. The ledges and ridges carry the most rust and orange, while the copper squares and the drawn-circle pieces are paler and quieter, with Pale Cream and Gold Blocks Abstract the lightest of all. If two pieces still feel close, pick the one whose darkest color already appears somewhere in the room.
