The Abstract Guide
Why abstract works when nothing else quite fits
Abstract art doesn't ask a room to agree with a subject — there's no farmhouse, no florals, no scene to clash with what's already on your walls. That makes it the easiest style to drop into a room that already has a strong personality, or one that hasn't quite decided what it wants to be yet.
The pieces in this style lean on color relationships, gesture, and negative space rather than representation. There are soft, cloud-like color studies; crisp color blocks; loose gestural scribbles, including a long run of wide pieces in burgundy, gold and blue-gray; and a few clean geometric compositions.
Where it works best
Abstract holds up anywhere a room needs a focal point without adding visual noise — above a sofa, over a console, in an entryway that sees a lot of foot traffic and needs one strong moment rather than several small ones. It's also the most forgiving style to hang near other art, since it rarely competes for the same kind of attention.
Sizing for the space
Abstract pieces read best oversized. A large single piece over a sofa carries a room; going too small tends to make the piece look incidental rather than intentional. If you're working with a narrower wall, choose one of the block or cloud pieces rather than the wide gestural series, which needs length to work.
Color pairing
Because these pieces are built on color first, match undertones rather than exact hues — warm rust, gold and burgundy tones sit naturally with wood and leather, while cooler blue, teal and navy pieces pair with stone, linen, and matte black hardware.

One statement piece, or a considered grouping?
With this many abstract pieces in one style, it's worth deciding upfront whether you want a single anchor or a grouped wall. A single large piece works as a focal point and asks nothing else of the room. A grouping of two or three smaller pieces in related tones can do more work in a hallway, stairwell, or over a long console.
If you're grouping, keep the palette tight — two or three pieces that share an undertone read as curated. Pieces from opposite ends of the palette (say, a cool slate piece next to a warm rust one) can work, but only with enough neutral wall space between them to let each piece breathe.
Matching to existing furniture
A room with strong existing color — a saturated sofa, patterned rug — does better with a more restrained, tonal abstract piece. A neutral room can support a bolder, higher-contrast piece as the room's main source of color.

Explore MoreChoosing Your Piece
Reading the page before you choose
This page groups into families more than single colors. The cloud pieces — orange and purple, magenta and burgundy, teal and apricot — are soft and edgeless. The block pieces are crisp and graphic, from two quiet navy blocks to a loud five-color stack. The gestural pieces are loose scribbles and sweeps, and nine of them form one wide series in burgundy, gold and blue-gray that is made to hang long and low.
Start with the family that suits your room's mood, then pick by color. A room with a lot of pattern already at play usually wants a cloud piece or one of the quieter blocks; a simple, neutral room can take the loud blocks or the busier gestural work.
If you're torn between two pieces in the same family, choose the one whose second color already appears somewhere in the room — a cushion, a rug, a book spine. That small echo is what makes a piece look chosen rather than added.
